What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
At its heart, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a system of self-defence that adheres to a simple underlying strategy: Defend – Escape – Control – Submit.
Jiu-Jitsu is a complete martial art because it incorporates a stand-up game, a takedown game, and a ground game.
To maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of techniques we rely heavily on the use of fulcrums, levers, wedges, and pinning. Thus it is possible for students to hold their own and potentially beat larger, stronger, more aggressive opponents.
Unlike most traditional martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t rely on kicks and strikes. Instead we learn to use joint locks and chokes to finish our opponents.

For much of the Twentieth Century, Jiu-Jitsu was largely unknown outside of Brazil. It wasn’t until the 1990s, Jiu-Jitsu exploded onto the world stage where it dominated fighting championships like Pride. It is now one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world and is now regarded as a key component of Mixed Martial Arts training.
This close relationship with world class competition has driven its evolution. Unlike traditional martial arts systems which are rigid and “fixed”, Jiu-Jitsu embraces change. “Old school” techniques are constantly being refined to make them more effective and more efficient.

One of the best things about Jiu-Jitsu is that it is adaptable. That means that it can be shaped to meet the needs of any student, regardless of their reasons for training.

Ultimately, Jiu-Jitsu is what you choose to make it. Everyone’s journey is unique. The most common reasons for training are self-defence, competition, and fitness. In our club, social reasons also important. We enjoy making friendships and training with our friends.
